i’m sitting here going through pictures from our trip to georgia & alabama in may for my cousin’s wedding… it was such a good visit & very special trip full of a number of reasons: seeing family i haven’t seen in years, introducing my husband and duke to my grandpa & grandma for the first time, having a good time with my folks a year after my mom’s cancer diagnosis.

and then i see my aunt’s foster son chase in all these pictures and immediately, my heart breaks. chase was put back with his father’s family last month. my aunt and uncle were in the process of adopting chase so it broke my heart to tell my sons that their cousin they had just met and bonded with, is gone – forever.

during my tears, duke asked me what was wrong and i told him that i “miss our family” and that i really wanted to see grandma and grandpa again. duke tells me, “i know, mom. i want to see grandma and grandpa too. i really miss our family – would you like to go back to alabama again?” wiping away the tears and asking my strong and wonderful 5 year old for a big hug – i tell him yes. i wish we were all closer.

chase had been with my aunt’s family for almost a year. he was 8 when he came to live with them, his parents were racist and drug addicts who abused him. they never enrolled him in school and he didn’t know what time of day breakfast, lunch and dinner is. there’s more to the story but i’ll spare everyone the horrible details, just know that he shouldn’t be placed with anyone in that family. granted, i don’t know the family but who doesn’t immediately fight for custody of a small child? i would’ve been banging on doors for custody of ANY of my nieces or nephews. & i’ve since watched the documentary “dear zachary” on netflix so my paranoia is at threat level red and i don’t trust anyone in chase’s family.

the afternoon i met him, i was sitting with my aunt and he came home from school – he ran up to us and gave my aunt the biggest hug and kiss, my aunt introduced us and he gave me the biggest hug, like he knew me forever. he wasn’t afraid to hold back and i admire him for that.

kids aren’t racist, they are taught. kids are taught love, understanding and compassion too. so next time a child wants to hug you tight, do it – no matter how long it’s for.

uncle vince (my aunt’s husband – chase’s foster dad) with chase and ena – duke and damien are on the other side enjoying a ride on uncle vince’s train!

we actually got to enjoy this weekend, our crazy work schedules usually have us working holidays or the day before or after. it was also the first year in a long time that i wanted to celebrate being an American. being an American comes with a lot of propaganda and social stigma but when it comes down to it, i would rather have some freedoms than NONE.

we got up super early on sunday to beat the crowds headed to the beach. we chose huntington beach because it’s about a 15 minute drive for us. parking was $15 and even though we stopped at our bank on the way, i made a mental note that the lots do, in fact, take credit cards! we chose to take a spot near lifeguard station #9 which wasn’t that far from the pier. it was close enough to the bathrooms, a concession stand and a bike rental shop.

the sky was overcast and downright gloomy but it was sooo nice. chris & i enjoyed the breeze in our chairs and let the kids dig holes, fly kites, look for hermit crabs & have a silly string fight (most of which did end up on them so no worries about birds, crustaceans or fish eating the string). we stayed for about 4 hours and decided to call it a day. the beach was starting to get packed and we were all starting to get hungry & tired! surprisingly, the only money spent there was on parking! GO US!

another thing that made me laugh was that my teenage son ty pointed out a lady sprawled out on a towel with an ipad. he asked why anyone would need an ipad at the beach… maybe someone can help me answer this?

on monday, we decided to go to ty & dame’s grandparents house for a bbq/pool party. rusty (ty & dame’s grandpa) made the best fresh strawberry daiquiris i’ve ever drank in my life. chris and i don’t really drink anymore so it was a one hitter quitter for me, i caught a very nice buzz! it was really nice chilling with their grandparents, we all had a great time!

after a week of trying to sell the BlogHer conference to C (& BEGGING) – he finally gave in! me so happy ^_^ his main complaint was both of us taking off from work again! i don’t blame him, the past few years have been full of us taking weeks off here and there for family trips, emergency trips and school.

i honestly don’t know what i’m getting into… i do know that i’m going to take it ALL in.

i am looking for sponsors – i don’t have ready made “sponsorship” packages or levels and i am picky in what companies i choose to partner with. my preference is with brands that are into family, art, beauty, music, food, fashion, culture, toys, tech, travel. here’s a taste of what i can offer: your ad on my site, product or service review, company logo + website on business cards distributed during BlogHer ’11, tweets, mentions on facebook, product or service giveaways on my blog or at the conference, exclusive use of your bag (with company logo) at the conference. i’m easy to work with and realistic – i can work with 5 companies at $100 each or 1 company at $500.

this is my first dip into this side of blogging – i have done many reviews out of my own pocket and still very fresh to this business. choose me and we can grow together!

we’re at the halfway mark of this year YAY! this year has been so different from last year that i’ve just been enjoying it. made a lot of good decisions with even better outcomes. i promised myself that i wouldn’t work anything crazy that i really didn’t want to – so i passed on working kroq’s weenie roast. last year’s weenie roast was a disaster. the area i was given to supervise was massive, it was crazy hot and i put in something like 14 hours and after C dropped me off, something hit our grille on the freeway and it shattered! it cost us around $200+ to replace! and usually when i work at other venues, the pay is always more than i make at my home venue but it wasn’t! i usually feel so guilty about not working certain events but so far so good - guilt free!

C & i got matching 4.0 GPAs for spring semester. proud moment for both of us cause there were times it felt like work, family life and school were just too much. the bigger picture here is setting a good example for our sons. you know what they say about next generations doing better…

my grandpa & grandma were flown out by my auntie lou on what i call a family tour. it started last october and they went to dallas, houston, alabama, san francisco and back to alabama for my cousin irene’s graduation from troy university and wedding. the plan was to meet up with him when he was in SF but C & i ended up working it out to where we could all make it out to alabama for a mini family reunion for my cousin’s wedding. i am so happy we made that decision because we had the best time. but i’m saving that for another entry.

reaching a blank at what else has happened this year… all i know is that i’ll be turning 36 in august – and i’m wearing it as a badge of honor – i have made it this far and i’m still standing!!! i still got that pep in my step! and in the fall, we’ll have one kid starting kindergarten, one starting jr. high and one starting high school. LIFE IS GOOD.

it’s been a long time since i left you…

2009 was an interesting year. most of it good, the worst was the debit card fraud. i try not to let that shit get me down and it definitely made us more careful and aware, another lesson learned. i think the best thing that happened to us last year was starting school.

my husband’s sister [v] and her family came out during christmas week. we all had such a good time. which brings me to 2010. already one month in and it’s been interesting. we flew into san antonio and surprised c’s dad at the end of january. c mentioned the trip to 3 of his 5 siblings and his mama so it was really cute seeing the reactions from the others. i really enjoyed his nieces and nephews. i also got to see my folks & sister so i was happy. the only sucky thing about coming home from a family trip is that i was numb from not seeing our families and being with them made me realize how much we really miss them. you might not know what i mean but it’s been a hard couple days being home…

i’ve also started to read more. c & i both finished “the tao of wu” by the rza of the wu tang clan. i’m about to read it again. so much of it made sense…

and on that note, i’ll leave you with this:
