i woke up in our comfy hotel bed, reached over and dismissed my droid alarm. i laid there and just relished about the day before. i had another tight schedule but i was feeling rebellious and decided that today was going to be the day that i just enjoyed myself.

i chose to walk to the convention center, it was such a gorgeous morning and i really enjoyed the 10+ block walk – i passed by the court, a federal building, a cute little park and the new children’s building. oh, and richard walker’s pancake house. the line outside was HUGE. never heard about it till my walk – known for it’s famous oven baked apple pancake, wish we had more time in the city to try it out! when i got into the breakfast area, i called ruby and she stood up with sandrini of soyfashionista.com waving their arms around like madwomen. i really enjoyed that. i sat for a minute and looked at their plates, WHAT? NO BACON! breakfast on day 2 lacked in what i needed the most – a hearty hot meal! there were pastries and oatmeal. i raided the vegan + gluten free tables for fresh fruit. the breakfast convo consisted of the swag bags that eden fantasys was giving out. ruby and sandrini were headed back to the expo hall and to check out sessions when ricca showed up – we planned on checking out the mom select swag suite together. grace of hapamama.com (& also race & ethnicity editor at BlogHer) joined us and we had the usual exchange of what we blog about and our expectations of BlogHer. after BlogHer, i saw grace’s post about an asian blog directory/list and am so excited!

the mom select swag suite was at the hilton bayfront and it was a walk. we got there and (of course!) the line was long. this event was super organized. some of the moms were foul. you basically check-in at the table, get to pick out a candy bar and reusable bag. then you head in and there’s a few rows of tables with displays of items and reps. the tables without reps had moms taking advantage of the situation and taking multiples of items. i have 3 kids and a ton of nieces and nephews that i could have easily stocked up on christmas and birthday gifts for but i was thoughtful of all the other ladies that spent money to attend to BlogHer. i was the last mom to get to the mega bloks when it ran out and i was just imagining a black friday fight to break out. but it didn’t and even though many of us were crazy impatient, we waited like civilized human beings to finish meeting with the rest of the reps.

by the time we were done, i was holding at least 40 pounds of swag and ricca had to run back to the expo hall to sign hp x snapfish books. we saw some pedicabs outside the hotel and asked how much… they seriously wanted $15 EACH. NO THANK YOU! i planned on attending a couple sessions that day but remembered that i promised myself that i was going to enjoy myself. i hung out with ricca for a bit while she signed books and wandered around the expo hall, again. i felt a bit intimidated by the bigger brands and their huge booths, i don’t think i’m the only one that felt this way either because those booths were the ones half empty. everyone knows who is a huge corporation (pepsico, P&G), maybe split your booth into several different booths by specific products. also have your reps stationed outside and easily accessible… the most inviting powerhouse brand was 3M. each and every one of their reps genuinely seemed interested to talk to me and my friends.

thee BEST session i attended was the hillshire farms food photography and styling workshop. i was walking in the marriott looking for the torrey pines 2 meeting room and was greeted by a girl in a hillshire farms apron that directed me to the room. when i got to the room, the room was open and prepped to go. i mention this because one of the events i attended was late on opening doors and there wasn’t any guidance. at all. things like this are frustrating because bloggers want info on certain things and if the reps don’t even know what’s going on – what good are they? #FAIL each of the chairs had a small swag bag. as i was getting ready to sit, i saw mona of kirida.com! she’s a fellow chamorro and i had planned on meeting her later that day. we sat down, talked for a bit and were advised that one of the panelists was running late and there would be a short delay. first impression and communication are definitely good traits that hillshire farms owns. the first panelist was food photographer sara remington. i was in awe of some of her pictures. who knew a huge stack of pancakes could look so good. she had great tips and i can’t wait to try some of ‘em out. the next panelist was food stylist william smith. good gawd, who knew there was such an art to food photography! he’s amazing. and the final panelist was my favorite. saveur.com web editor helen rosner (@hels). she is blunt and professional. i didn’t think i would be so into her presentation. but the absolute best part? the one on one conversation we had at the end. she gave me some positive thoughts and reinforcement into what i had already believed. i really really love her!!! THANK YOU HILLSHIRE FARMS!
check out my notes:

at this point, feeling super inspired – i decided to make use of my free pass and ditch the help screening i was supposed to attend. i headed back to the expo hall, met up with more brands that i’ve used in the past or am genuinely interested in working with. i missed lunch so i scoured the hall for food (which there was never a lack of) – the yummiest thing i had was a hillshire farms “light” cuban. i think it was light from what i was told. i just wanted to run out of there and eat it in private. (this was my personal preference – hillshire farms actually had an area you could sit at and order other food! whoa at that concept!) as i walked outside of the expo hall, the afternoon snack tables were being set up. i grabbed a plate of hummus, chips and soda and found a nice area right outside of the expo area. i sat on the floor and other ladies had the same idea of me. a little bit of peace and quiet to enjoy a snack. it was sublime.

i still had a bunch of time left till the night events and decided to take a cab back to my hotel. it was really nice to have my husband and youngest one waiting for me back at the hotel, dropping in on them was definitely a huge highlight of my trip.

saturday night parties and swag posts, next!

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Kool Aid. All opinions are 100% mine.

i remember kool-aid man when i was a kid and i’m sure because of him i’ll always have fond memories of a vivid and happy icon from my childhood (unlike some scary other ones but i won’t say any names)… my favorite kool-aid flavor has and always will be cherry. i remember my grandma, aunts and uncles always making huge pitchers of Kool-Aid in the summer when it was sooo hot outside. my grandma used to call me and my cousins when it was ready and we would race inside to get our fix. on special days, grandma would let us make popsicles or even eat the mix out of the packet. i used to pretend it was lipstick!

kool-aid was a staple in our family because growing up on an island, you don’t have much choices! it was fun, easy to make, readily available and easy to store! we have a huge family and it was economical for parties and barbecues!

those were the days, oh yeah!

when it comes to making new memories with my own kids, cherry is still the flavor of choice with us. i’m sure my kids would love to mix flavors and i’m game! i love how kool-aid has evolved since i was a kid and i can’t wait to try deep fried kool-aid at the oc fair! be sure to check out Kool-Aid noches de pelikoola on facebook!

the best way to explain din din a go go is by the tagline on their site, “bringing the best food trucks to the best cities every week! ” – C and i usually don’t chase food trucks for a couple reasons… the major one being that some cities aren’t food truck friendly. there is nothing worse than some crazy business owner wanting to shoo the trucks away or a police officer bullying a food truck to leave by using non-existent laws. these din din a go go weekly locations make it easy for people to check out trucks and enjoy their food. picture my excitement when i came across a tweet that a local one was opening up this week.

we got there and it was buzzing with business! look at this happy girl (not me)

first stop is truck norris! filipino + hawaiian food!

sisig taco($3) and short rib taco ($3) were completely yummy. our fave was the short rib taco. the marinade on the ribs were sooo good.

we debated getting something from the grill ‘em all truck but passed… decided to get some cupcakes from sweet e’s bakeshop. mini cupcakes were $2 each. i chose snickerdoodle, c chose smores and duke chose chocolate chip cookie dough. i wanted a chocolate chip cookie and c wanted a white chocolate rice krispy. our total was $9.25 and that kinda amazed me – i should have bought more! they were all yummy. c didn’t even offer me a bite of his!

here’s the little one begging for MY cookie. he’s my baby so of course he gets it lol

the vchos truck was smelling good so we decided to look at the pictures on the truck. it looked so good and we went for a chicken pastelito ($3) and 3 shrimp & potato taquitos ($7) – when c picked up our order, the dude said to break the pastelito in half and put curtido before each bite. wish he gave us more curtido, it was so good!

the grilled shrimp and potatoes taquitos are so freakin’ GOOD. seriously.

smart people brought their own portable chairs and tables, others opened the backs of their trucks or ate off the hoods of their cars. we decided to get one last thing from truck norris before we took off…

the won-tonutella ($2) – it was glorious. i could probably make this. i will probably make this. sidebar: it was probably 8pm when we ordered this and the short rib tacos were sold out already. so if you want ‘em, go early!

and our cheeseball. yep, he’s our dork.

this is an awesome idea so big props to the brains behind din din a go go. it’s really community & small business building. this is what works and i hope parents take their kids, parents, neighbor’s kids to these type of FREE events. share new and celebrate old culture!

today was my appointment time for class registration for the fall semester. of course i was crazy all morning. it also didn’t help that karmaloop did this promo where they randomly tweeted (5) $100 giftcodes for reaching 50,000 followers. since i’ve had amazing luck on twitter, i convinced myself i’d be able to do some back to school shopping for the boys. c picked some neff backpacks for the boys & a couple t-shirts, it was just sitting in the cart and when i finally got my hands on the final giftcode (along with 49,999 other twitter followers)… the site decided to crash and timeout. BOO!

i really drove myself insane by refreshing karmaloop’s twitter and the #BlogHer11 hashtag and being paranoid that the classes i wanted wouldn’t be open… but all of it was for nothing – i got all my classes! just one of those rare neurotic days…

what really made me breathe was watching this video about the sparklecorn party. looks like these bloggers know how to PARTAY! HAY!

you are going to need to slice (1) pound cake. lay ‘em flat on a plate – about 8-10 slices. make the large box of jello brand vanilla pudding but instead of 3 cups of milk, use 2 1/2. pour the pudding on the slices right after you mix it up – make sure you cover each slice!, sprinkle some cinnamon and leave it in the fridge for a few hours.

if that’s not super easy (& cheap!), i don’t know what to tell ya! it’s super yummy! if you want to impress your friends or family, be sure to bring this to the next bbq or potluck – ENJOY!

if you live in a neighborhood that has an elotes man consider yourself lucky. i live in the ‘hood albeit a very nice part of the hood because “the vieja” lives in our complex. the vieja, as chris & myself lovingly call her to ourselves, is a very cute grandmother of 6 kids, she doesn’t speak english but she can get her word across. the woman means business. when we first moved in 6 years ago, she didn’t like us. she made us prove ourselves and we respect her for that. i remember a few years ago when some teenagers decided to hang out in the courtyard, she came downstairs and put ‘em in their place. this is just how she does and i’m grateful for her. i’d like to dedicate a whole entry to her actually. so hope for more later.

about the elotes man. you know it’s summer when he starts coming around. since we live in a cul-de-sac, he usually gets dropped off here and makes his rounds… this is definitely a benefit to us since we’re the first stop – our elotes are piping hot and super fresh. you know he’s here when you hear that bicycle bell, you peek outside and run around looking for change because you live off your atm card. if you are lucky, he’s just posted up in the yard waiting on customers. today we were lucky enough.

if you’ve never had an elote, it’s fresh white corn on a stick slathered with mayo, queso cotija, parkay margaine and chile powder. it may sound disgusting but it’s SO GOOD. a few summers ago it was $1 and last summer it was $1.25. this summer it’s $1.50 but i’m not complaining… all i had to do was throw on my chanclas and open my front door. didn’t even have to waste gas or use energy to go somewhere to get it. these are just some of the perks of living in the hood.

i’m addicted to the .99 store. go ahead and schedule an intervention cause it’s getting that bad. it’s hit or miss and not all the stores get the same stuff so i like hitting up different ones. C hates shopping there because of certain elements that tend to shop there also – we’ve encountered stinky homeless people and lots of tweakers. not that we’re judging people for their lifestyles but damn, they make it hard for a girl to shop in peace!

last week i purchased sara lee bagels (super fresh!), mushrooms, organic baby spinach, mini seedless watermelon, dole strawberries, and pillsbury sweet moments chocolate fudge molten lava brownies.

AND there were also littlest pet shop! i filled up the cart with about 12 of ‘em for nieces, donations, yard sale or ebay and we left satisfied. these toys are usually $5-7 so we could not pass ‘em up! we went to drop dame at his dad’s house and thought about picking up the rest of ‘em cause we get OCD like that… we returned about 20 minutes later and they were ALL GONE. so what did we do? we went to another one! and they had different ones! SCORE!

we’ve passed this place a million times but it looked like a bad, BAD hole in the wall. the area it’s in is pretty sketchy too so that was another negative. it always looks busy so i should’ve listened to the food network host inside me and given it a chance. we went on saturday after an adventure at the cypress college swap meet – the tables were all taken and there was a mix of different cultures enjoying lunch. i chalked it up to another positive sign of good food.

i wanted carnitas with rice & beans but didn’t see it on the menu so C asked if they could do that type of plate, yes. C ordered a carne asada burrito with a side of rice and we decided to split a can of coke. our total was about $14 and some change. we went to stand near the door to wait for our order when a table opened up and we grabbed it, 10 minutes later our number was called and our plates looked SOOO GOOD. the mexican rice was so good, orange in color and full of flavor – it was so fresh too. the beans were just as good. my carnitas were tender and not old, greasy or charred like i’ve had at other places. i don’t mind burnt ends but this was without, it was excellent. C loved the rice too, we couldn’t stop talking about it. his burrito was huge and full of carne asada, they don’t skimp on meat. the carne asada looked fresh too – the way all food should be.

i have been craving tacos san pedro since last week but we haven’t been back. i guarantee you more trips will be in the future. AND if you know me, i usually read yelp reviews before trying a new place out but i didn’t this time – in fact, i just checked yelp before i decided to blog about it and can co-sign the positive reviews.

the best mom & pop burger i’ve ever had is from angelo’s burgers. C & i came across this place by chance, after leaving our college to check out art supply warehouse. angelo’s is out of the way from where we live but the burgers are THAT GOOD and worth the drive. i think the hamburger, fries and drink special we get is $5.29 - they have the usual mom & pop fare like breakfast served all day, mexican food and new york steak dinners for $8. we have yet to try anything else out because like i said, their burgers are GOOD. we usually go during the week and it’s fairly busy but we went on sunday and it was super busy. lots of families having breakfast in the afternoon and friends just hanging out at the local burger joint.
