FREE art publications

23 Aug

the art street journal is a free international art newspaper that’s published in LA by carmichael gallery.  you can receive yours for FREE via snail mail by subscribing on the site.  who doesn’t love free mail?!  my fave in the recent issue is the coverage of serbian photographer BOOGIE.  you might recognize some of boogie’s work in the new HBO series, “how to make it in america” – thanks elisa & seth carmichael!

i came across of our own zine at a local art store.  it was the last copy left.  if you know me there’s nothing i love more than homemade do it yourself zines – there is nothing greater than the smell of fresh ink on paper.  I HEARTHEARTHEART PRINT! of our own zine is full of good art, reads and imagery with few ads.  this zine has great potential and i secretly hope they up their internet game so i can check it out even if i can’t find the print version.  one of the ads that caught my eye was wewillconquer.com

if you are a fan of photography (or just like shitter material), get FREE subscriptions to after capture magazine and rangefinder magazine – i’ve been receiving these magazines for the past 2 years!

david choe by david choe out now.

20 Jul

my husband and i checked out david choe‘s nothing to declare show at lazarides gallery in beverly hills in april. i’ve always been on the fence about david choe and it’s safe to say my husband wasn’t really a fan until we checked out his pieces in person. there’s usually a disconnect among things you see on the internet vs. in person but looking at the opening night and preview pictures we decided to brave the 90210 crowd and see for ourselves. the location that lazarides chose was quite nice, it is rumored to have been an abercrombie & fitch store so the space was huge and the dressing rooms were left intact. the lighting and displaying of pieces really added to the experience as well which is important to c & i. artists and curators should put more thought into those key components and not just throwing art on some white walls!

pick up his book, i KNOW it’s worth it.
$45 from chronicle books but if you use the code: FRIENDS you’ll get 35% OFF AND FREE SHIPPING.
good till 7/28. oh yea, choe is also releasing his munko whale figures ($11 per blindbox) with giant robot. @AsaAkira says munko means pussy in japanese. check out her spread.

$3 art

7 Jul

when i married my husband, i was gifted with about 14 nieces & nephews – all of whom i enjoy very much.  their ages range from 9 months to 21 years so it’s a nice little mix for me and makes birthday & christmas shopping interesting for us.  since we strive to be the cool aunt & uncle, we tune into their likes and one particular teen niece wants to visit paris and her teen brother wants to visit nyc and i came across some awesome “decorative paper” at an art supply store that we sent to them for their birthdays last month.  the prints were about 18″  x 24″ and great quality.  the best part was that they were about $3.27 each.  more proof you can be cool while being cheap.

no thoughts 2 zine

1 Dec

photographer michael j. demeo started following me on twitter and i returned the favor…soon enough i was checking out his tumblr, flickr and site and came across photographer alyssa noches (who happens to be his gf) .   i commented on one of alyssa’s fotos and was thrilled when she asked for my address to send me some prints!  a couple weeks later i found out that they were releasing their current zine “no thoughts 2″ for FREE.  the zine is full of excellent shots.  the print quality is one of the best ones i’ve seen.  the price is right.    you should ask for it.

you should also check out their site we are now in space

the only rules are: 1) you have to have taken the photo 2) write/label your shipping address clearly 3) prints should be 5×7 or smaller 4) go in with an open mind 5) have fun!

are you in?

humpday hoppin’

10 Aug

last wednesday afternoon my husband surprised me with a trip to LA. it was our first time leaving the house at 1pm and we didn’t know what kind of traffic to expect… yep, it was bad. it took us about an hour to get there. our first stop was scion space in culver city. i wanted to check out the 2009 vice magazine photo exhibition.

the place is a little bit hard to find since it’s in the neighborhood. it’s a nice gallery though, really spacious and we had a good talk with kenton! he hooked us up with all kinds of shit too. i appreciate good convo with a genuine motherfucker, thanks kenton!

our next stop was the michael kohn gallery on beverly/crescent heights to check out the david lynch show. the photos were inspired by danger mouse & sparklehorse‘s music from the “dark night of the soul“. i was a bit floored by the visuals only because i’m familiar with lynch’s films. my 3 year old favored the piece which featured a bloody arm.

the main gallery is connected to either another gallery or an office space. it was cordoned off but we were nosy and it was worth a peek…because there lived a beautiful ryden piece.

afterwards we indulged in chicken bowls at yoshinoya and had yummy scoops. i usually only have a bowl (it’s considered 2 scoops for $2.75 – can ya beat that?!) but the flavor selection was so good i got a refill (2 more scoops for only $1.75!) so in total i had blueberry marscapone, strawberry coconut, mango grapefruit and malt toffee. c had banana oreo and chocolate almond. the grapefruit in the mango grapefruit was a bit overpowering but still good for a hot summer day. i couldn’t resist!

i was hoping tae (owner and flavor creator) was around so i could tell him about my scoops photo that was published in the july/august 2009 issue of LA confidential magazine! THANKS SCOOPS!

there is so much stuff to do in LA, get out and see art! try different food! enjoy the city!
